The Problem Child returns against ex-Golden Gloves champ
As strange as it may sound, you can no longer accuse Paul of chasing the grifting dollar in his quest to become a legitimate boxer. Yes, the Problem Child's early opponents ranged from basketball players to fading UFC stars but the former influencer has acquitted himself increasingly well in his two of his three most recent bouts against actual boxers.
Bourland may be a veteran whose last fight came in September 2022 with a stoppage of Santario Martin, but he has more grade and experience than any of Paul's nine previous opponents.
Paul vs Bourland is the co-feature fight of the evening, with Amanda Serrano vs Nina Meinke for the former's three world title belts the main event.

YouTube star Paul will face professional boxer Ryan Bourland in Puerto Rico, before Serrano boxes Nina Meinke. Paul’s bout follows his December victory over another pro boxer in Andre August, whom the 27-year-old knocked out in round one.
American Bourland, 35, has a pro record of 17-2 with six knockouts, while his compatriot Paul is 8-1 (5 KOs). However, Bourland has not fought since September 2022.
In the main event, Puerto Rico’s own Serrano defends her unified featherweight titles against Germany’s Meinke. The fight, between the two southpaws, marks Serrano’s second straight contest to be scheduled for 12 three-minute rounds; after the WBC refused to endorse a 12-round women’s title fight, Serrano vacated the organisation’s belt in December.

Jake Paul (8-1, 5 KOs) takes another step on his long road to a legitimate title shot with a fight against Ryan Bourland (17-2, 6 KOs) this weekend. Paul, who has previously fought big names like Floyd Mayweather Jr. and a slew of MMA fighters, says he plans to fight several opponents at his experience level over the next few years, climbing the rankings until he earns a shot at a title the old-fashioned way. Bourland is a former Golden Gloves champion, but Paul is heavily favored. Paul knocked out his last opponent, Andre August, 28 seconds into the fight. Vegas has set the over-under odds for the fight at 1.5 rounds, meaning they suspect another early knockout.
Paul vs. Bourland will fill the co-main event slot for the Amanda Serrano vs. Meinke fight on March 2. Paul returns after winning over former UFC superstar Nate Diaz and professional boxer Andre August in 2023.
Paul has bounced back nicely after suffering his first professional defeat against Tommy Fury in February 2023. Before the loss to Fury, he won his first six professional fights, including victories against former UFC champions Tyron Woodley and Anderson Silva.
Bourland returns to the ring with a 17-2 professional boxing record, including a Golden Gloves championship. The 35-year-old has won three fights in a row with recent victories against Santario Martin and Jose Hernandez.
Paul has a lot of potential big-name boxing fights on his radar if he gets past Bourland. He's called out the likes of fellow YouTuber KSI and a rematch with Fury as he looks ahead to the rest of 2024.
Despite Paul's 2024 debut, his upcoming fight might've snuck up on boxing fans worldwide. For the first time in a long time, Paul will not be the main attraction, as that privilege will go to his teammate Serrano for her spotlight matchup.
The bout is the latest entry in Paul's quest for credibility within the boxing world. Much like his last opponent, Andre August, Bourland is not a well-known fighter or celebrity. The 35-year-old is an experienced boxer with a 17-2 (6 KOs) record.
Paul will bring an 8-1 record to the ring. His last appearance was a first-round knockout of August. Bourland should be considered a step up from August. He's the same age (35) but has more fights to his name.
Regardless, it's a bout that is bound to bring more eyes to this card. Paul has proven his drawing power already and continues to have success against his opponents.
Paul seems to have shifted his sights from fellow celebrities and influencers to fighters with a real boxing background with his last two opponents. Andre August wasn't a high level boxer, but he had 12 professional fights going into the bout. He's taking another small step up in competition with Bourland.
A close fight with August might not have earned Paul much respect, but his first-round knockout at least forced oddsmakers to sit up and pay attention.
Paul was only a -750 favorite when he fought August back in December. After smashing him with an uppercut in the first round, he's a much bigger favorite against Bourland.
Bourland doesn't present a lot of major challenges on paper. He does have 19 fights to his name and a 17-2 record, but many of those wins have come against fighters with losing records.
He only has a 35.2 knockout percentage. He did score a knockout win in his last fight but it was against a 4-6 Santario Martin back in September 2022. That's his only fight since 2018.
In short, Paul is fighting a 35-year-old whose primary experience is fighting club-level fighters more than five years ago.
Paul needs to log rounds and sharpen his skills if he wants to become a legitimate title contender. There's nothing wrong with the pairing, but if Paul wants to make an impression he's going to need to earn another highlight reel knockout.
